AAA Hockey Expenses: What Parents Need to Know Before You Commit

Deciding whether AAA hockey is worth the significant investment can be challenging. I definitely learned, number one in Smart Ways to Manage Costs.  In my son's 15th year, we attended every camp and tournament offered.  While fun trips, you learn they are not the scouting opportunities they are marketed as, especially at age 15.

Here's what every hockey parent should know about the true costs and how to plan smartly:

🔹 Team Fees & Ice Time: Typically $3,000–$8,000 annually.
🔹 Travel Costs: Hotels, meals, and gas can add another $2,000–$5,000 per season.
🔹 Gear & Equipment: Quality skates, sticks, pads, helmets—budget around $1,000–$2,000 annually.
🔹 Extra Training & Camps: Skills clinics, strength and conditioning sessions add up quickly ($500–$2,500 annually).

💡 Smart Ways to Manage Costs:

✅ Choose tournaments strategically—not every event is essential.
✅ Buy gear during offseason sales or secondhand to save big. (ie. Sideline Swap)
✅ Carpool with other families to minimize travel expenses.

Remember: AAA hockey can open amazing opportunities, but clear financial expectations are key. Invest wisely in your player’s potential, not just prestige!
