Making the Jump: What 12–14-Year-Old Hockey Players Need to Focus On

The years between 12 and 14 are some of the most critical in a hockey player's development. It's a time when skills are refined, confidence is built, and players either plateau or prepare to level up. If you're a young player—or a parent guiding one—here’s what matters most right now:

1. Master the Fundamentals

The best players aren’t just flashy—they’re fundamentally sound. That means:

  • Repetition with skating, puck control, shooting, and passing.

  • Drills done with purpose and focus.

  • Continuing to develop edge work and explosiveness.

Skating is still the foundation of the game. Never stop working on it.

2. Hockey IQ & Game Awareness

As players move into higher competition, the game gets faster—not just physically, but mentally. Players who succeed are the ones who understand:

  • Positioning – Know where to be with and without the puck.

  • Play anticipation – Think 2–3 steps ahead.

  • Decision-making – Make fast, smart choices under pressure.

Watch games with intent. Ask, “What would I do in this situation?”

3. Coachability Matters

Being coachable is a skill in itself. At this level, coaches are watching for:

  • Effort during every drill.

  • Eye contact when they speak.

  • Hustle and respect.

  • The willingness to apply feedback and learn.

These traits often matter more than raw talent.

4. Off-Ice Strength & Conditioning

Young athletes don’t need to lift heavy, but they do need to build a foundation:

  • Bodyweight exercises (push-ups, squats, planks)

  • Balance drills (BOSU, one-leg stands)

  • Mobility and core strength

Conditioning and strength allow players to skate longer, battle harder, and reduce injury risk.

5. Mental Toughness & Mindset

This is where growth really happens. Development isn’t a straight line. There will be:

  • Setbacks

  • Cuts from teams

  • Bad games or slumps

What matters is how you respond. Players who stay focused on their own progress, who control what they can, and who love the process will always move forward.

Final Thoughts

Everyone develops at their own pace. The most important thing at this age is to stay focused on your journey. Bring effort and energy every day. Players who show up consistently with the right attitude tend to rise above.

Keep going. Your next level is within reach.
