Season's End: What Every Player and Parent Should Reflect On Right Now
As hockey seasons begin to wrap up across the country, it’s easy to close the book and take a breather. But this time—right now—is one of the most valuable windows in a player's development cycle.
Here’s how to help your player get the most from their season, even after the final buzzer sounds:
1. Evaluate Progress, Not Just Stats
Goals and assists are great—but growth is bigger than numbers. Ask:
-
Did your player improve key skills?
-
Were they more confident, physical, or aware?
-
How did they respond to adversity?
A clear-eyed reflection shows where they’ve grown—and what still needs work.
2. Get Feedback Before You Forget
Don’t wait until next season. Now is the time to:
-
Talk to coaches about strengths and development areas
-
Ask for honest feedback on hockey IQ, attitude, and compete level
-
Use this input to shape off-season goals
3. Reassess the Development Path
Is your current team, coach, or level helping your player improve?
Would more or less travel help long-term development?
Is a new challenge (or more reps at the current level) the right call?
Don’t make changes out of frustration—make them with a plan.
4. Set Goals for the Off-Season
Players who wait until August fall behind. The off-season starts now:
-
Choose 2–3 key skills to improve
-
Create a balanced plan with rest, strength training, and on-ice work
-
Stay sharp, but don’t burn out—rest is part of growth
5. Celebrate the Journey
Win or lose, this season was part of the path. Recognize:
-
Progress
-
Effort
-
Resilience
-
Teammates who helped your player grow
A season's end isn’t the end—it’s a checkpoint.
