Choosing the Right Hockey Summer Camp: What Parents Need to Know
Summer hockey camps can be an incredible tool for development — or a frustrating waste of time and money. The key? Choosing the right camp for your player’s stage, goals, and mindset.
Every year, parents are flooded with glossy flyers, big-name instructors, and promises of “exposure.” But here’s the truth: not every camp delivers the development your player needs.
This post gives you a quick checklist to make smarter decisions — and keep your summer plan aligned with your long-term goals.
✅ 1. Research Which Camp Is the Best Fit
Don’t choose a camp because it’s nearby or because friends are going. Consider:
-
Skill Level: Is it age-based or skill-based grouping?
-
Focus Area: Skating, shooting, conditioning, or full gameplay?
-
Coach-to-Player Ratio: Smaller groups often mean better feedback.
-
Camp Culture: High-pressure, high-rep or supportive skill-building?
Ask for the daily schedule and coach bios. If they can’t provide it — move on.
✅ 2. Reserve Your Spot Early
Popular camps fill fast — often months in advance. Waiting too long can limit your options or push you toward overpriced or underperforming programs.
Book early if:
-
It’s a specialty camp (like defense-specific or goaltending-focused)
-
It offers housing (billet-style or dorm)
-
You’re trying to coordinate with summer showcases or tryouts
✅ 3. Check for Discounts or Financial Aid
Many camps offer:
-
Early bird pricing
-
Sibling or team discounts
-
Local “commuter” pricing (vs. full overnight stay)
Ask about scholarships or assistant coaching trades. You’d be surprised what you can work out — especially with locally run programs.
✅ 4. Have Realistic Expectations
A 5-day camp won’t turn your player into a D1 prospect. But it can:
-
Reinforce key habits
-
Increase conditioning
-
Expose them to new coaching styles
-
Boost confidence before tryouts
Set expectations with your player: go to learn, compete, and grow — not to chase stardom.
BONUS: See the Bigger Picture
Camp is just one piece of your hockey year. Where it fits into your long-term development strategy matters more than the logo on the jersey.
